Welcome to Yazd! Renowned as the center of silk and wool fabrics, which lies across the central desert of Iran, close to the Spice and Silk Road. Despite its location, Yazd, just like any other desert city in Iran, has many green gardens and green areas, located near Qanats, an ancient Iranian engineering technique. The smart solution for the water supply, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site invention, which drew underground water. The historical city of Yazd has also been recognized a world Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2017.
The courtyards of traditional houses (built below the ground level), wind catchers and earthen walls all together come to have a pleasant microclimate. As for the streets and alleys, public courtyards, Sabats (partially or entirely covered alleys and a chain of arches for sun protection) and main squares, shape Yazd and its urban features.
Some highlights of Yazd, including Amir Chakhmaq Complex with its unique courtyards, traditional districts like Fahadan old neighborhood, Ziyaeyeh School (AKA Alexanders Prison), Water Museum, Qanat system, bazaars, water cisterns, hammams (baths), Congregational (Jameh) Mosque, traditional houses, wind towers and Dolat Abad Garden can explain briefly the history of this ancient city. The continuously burning Zoroastrian Fire Temple and Dakhme, the former Zoroastrian cemetery, known today as the tower of silence, bear fascinating historical stories of Zoroastrian culture.
At every turn, with every look, every brick of the houses, neighborhoods and alleys are still bearing the same soul of 2000 years ago.
